Ruth Steelman claims that a few months after her marriage in 1838 her husband began to treat her in a "most cruel and barbarous" manner. He used vulgar and abusive language, and accused her of having "intercourse with both white & black." When he threatened to kill her, Ruth left and went to live with her father. She seeks a divorce and alimony.
