Petition #21284110

Abstract

Leaving her father's home near Hillsborough, North Carolina, Mary Whitsell went with her new husband to a farm some twenty-three miles distant. Before the end of the first year, she discovered her husband's "propensities to drink to excess & that he sometimes left her for the purpose of keeping the company of several lewd women." He also beat her "in a cruel manner." He is currently arranging to sell his land and slaves to his son by a previous marriage, Mary asserts, and then "turn her out." She seeks a divorce and alimony.
