Mary McKinne, a minor suing by her guardian, asks to sell a mulatto slave named Calvin who ran off three years ago but has been captured and jailed in another county. He says that the slave is an "artful and cunning fellow" and would, if returned to his owner, doubtless run away again. Mary McKinne informs the court that Calvin had tried to pass as free by using another man's freedom papers.
