Free black Henry Barnes, between sixty and seventy years of age, seeks to emancipate his wife Judith Barnes, who is in her fifties. On one occasion, Henry recounts, Judith delivered a baby for a Mrs. Jacobs, wife of Zachariah Jacobs, who was "suddenly taken in labor." She saved the mother and child's life. Since then, without having adopted it "as a business or a source of profit," Judith has counseled other women in midwifery.
