Abstract
Despite a certificate of freedom signed by the clerk of the Chatham County court, free black Edward Hammons was arrested and jailed in Craven County as a runaway slave. Beginning as a trip to visit friends, he has now been in jail, "unjustly and illegally," for six months. He asks for a writ of habeas corpus so he can prove his status and be "discharged from further imprisonment."
