When she discovered that her husband was "indulging in sexual intercourse with his own negro woman slave by the name of Polly," Elizabeth Clubb confronted David Clubb with the accusation. He "grew so violent & abusive," Elizabeth testifies, that she was forced to flee from their home. He had previously beaten her, she says, and had even permitted Polly to strike her, egging her on by saying that "she had not beaten your petitioner enough." After Elizabeth left, Polly gave birth to a baby boy. Elizabeth has no doubt about the boy's paternity. She asks for a divorce and alimony. In a related answer, David Clubb charges that his wife "communicated" to him a venereal disease and that he has discovered she was a common prostitute.
