Laura Vanstore says that her husband James abandoned her "altogether, refused to let her live with him, maliciously keeps her out of his house, and drives her away." He sold his property, moved to another section of the county, and now lives with another woman. She asks for divorce and alimony. In his defense, James Vanstore said Laura gave birth to "a bastard child" before their marriage. Witnesses testified that the child's father was "Fultons Joe." The slave "took holt of her & commenced raising her Clothes," a witness to Laura's recounting the incident said, "then she replyed that you Know Joe such as this will not do he said he must have a little any how, Laura said that was about the time the Child was got."
Result: Granted.
