Edward Karsey, a free person of color, seeks a divorce from his wife on the grounds that she is not a person of mixed racial origin as he believed when they were married but is a white woman. After he confronted her with this charge, she "abandoned herself to the most lewd and vicious course," indulging "in criminal conversation" with a number of men.
