Less than a year after her marriage, Parthena Foster's husband James Foster, a minor under the guardianship of Dr. Charles M. Foster, left "for parts unknown." Even while they were together, she states, James sought the company of prostitutes. In addition, he was a violent man who threatened to kill her. Parthena explains that James is the owner of one hundred acres of land and one slave. She sues James and his guardian, Dr. Ford. She seeks alimony and a divorce.
