Petition #21285106

Abstract

In 1815, in his will, John B. Shaw loaned his wife Franky Shaw ten slaves during her lifetime, or widowhood; after her death, he gave one of the slaves, a black woman named Isabel, to his daughter Polly Morgan "and her heirs forever." John Shaw died in 1816, but his daughter died before his wife, who lived another thirty-five years. After the wife's death in 1851, the executor of John B. Shaw's estate, Peyton High, took possession of Isabel and her approximately twenty children and grandchildren. In his suit, the administrator of Polly Morgan's estate argues that Lemuel Morgan, Polly's widower, is entitled to the "the said woman Isabel" and her "large increase."
