After twenty-five years of marriage, Mary Fulton charges that her husband has "become intolerable in his neglect & abuse." Things became especially difficult after he received a portion of her father's thirty-thousand-dollar estate, divided among her and her eight siblings. With some of this inheritance, he purchased several slaves. She fears that he will sell the slaves and "leave your Petitioner destitute." She asks the court to grant her "a divorce & alimony & that the Estate due and comeing in right of your petitioner may be Secured to her."
