For many years, Sarah Edwards testifies, her husband has treated her in a cruel and mean manner. He called her "the most disgraceful & opprobrious epithets," and beat and abused her by striking her "with his fists upon the head' and slapping her around "with great violence." She did nothing to warrant such treatment, and asks for a divorce and alimony, noting that her husband has a large estate "consisting of about fourteen hundred acres of land, two slaves & much other valuable stock--cattle and other property." She also asks for an injunction to prevent him from selling his property until the case can be decided.
