Abstract
Married in 1852, Matilda Everton charges that her husband Major mistreated her and her children by a former marriage by using coarse and vulgar language, and by accusing her of adultery. Also, as she lay in bed suffering from a grave illness, he shot one of her children's slaves, and severely whipped two of his own slaves, causing her severe mental anguish. She seeks a divorce and alimony. In a lengthy answer, the husband denies the charges.
