Lewis Walton, Joseph and John Coltraine, joint owners of Thomas Gossett, a slave over fifty years of age, ask that Gossett be freed for meritorious services. An industrious, honest, humble, and faithful servant, Gossett risked his life to carry his owner's valuable property--a desk, papers, money--out of a burning house. Thomas, a house servant at the New Garden Boarding House, has been considered as a free man ever since.
