In 1858, free black Allen Floyd "either lost his free papers or they were stolen from him by some person to your orator unknown." When the papers were found in the possession of a runaway slave in Wilmington, Floyd was informed by two white men that he was in danger of being arrested. One of the men, who claimed to be a lawyer, promised to defend him if he signed a $125 bond. Floyd signed a note and paid twenty-six dollars in cash. The two men, Floyd now charges, were only attempting to defraud him; he requests that the bond be declared invalid.
