Married in 1849, Nancy Jane Brooks seeks a divorce and alimony, charging that her husband, a teacher, is "a drunkard and spendthrift" who has slept with his hired slave and free black women. Indeed, she testifies, he kept up "shameless adulterous intercourse with divers negroes." In addition, on one occasion, he stripped her and whipped her mercilessly.
