Petition #21286706

Abstract

Married in 1860, Annie Gamble possessed livestock, household and kitchen furniture, money due her from her father's estate, and a female slave. In her petition for divorce seven years later, she relates that her husband sold the slave for one thousand dollars, kept the other property, and upon returning from the war accused her of being "incontinent and unfaithful." Moreover, John Gamble "did actually beat, whip, maltreat your petitioner with a horse-whip," she testifies, "while his brother William Gamble held and choked her, leaving many bruises on her person, all of which was without cause or provocation." In his response, John Gamble says that when he returned his wife "appeared far gone in pregnancy."
