Petition #21381407

Abstract

Mary McAdams asks that her husband, Joseph McAdams, "be compelled to maintain your oratrix, or make such reasonable allowance out of his property for that purpose." Mary states that she and Joseph married in 1806 and that she was then "possessed of a considerable personal estate consisting of negroes," sundry livestock and furniture, and cash. She recounts that said Joseph was "greatly indebted" in 1806 and that "except by the property which he acquired by the said intermarriage, had not the means of satisfying his debts;" Mary confirms that most of her said property was used "for that purpose." The petitioner charges that "for a number of years" her husband has been "neglecting your oratrix's maintenance." Confiding that Joseph "has often beat her most cruelly," she reveals that he has "left your oratrix and cohabits with another woman." Mary further discloses that Joseph refuses "to allow her one cent out of his property." She therefore prays that her husband be decreed to contribute "towards your oratrix's maintenance or comfort;" that she "may be permitted to live separately and apart from the said Joseph, and secured against any interruption from him, as to her person, and her earnings by her own labour;" and that he be restrained "from going out of the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court."
