Petition #21381712

Abstract

Robert Jackson and Alexander King ask that John Dawson "be prevented from removing or departing from or going beyond the Limits of this State without the leave of this Honorable Court." The petitioners state that they purchased "three certain negro Slaves to wit Angelina & her two children" from Dawson in 1812 and that they sold Angelina to Thomas Duggan in 1814. They further recount that Dr. Joseph Jones "brought his Action" against them in 1817 "for the purpose of recovering the said negro Slaves." The petitioners, "being alarmed and feeling themselves much in danger ... in case of the Judgment of the said Court," requested Dawson "to Indemnify them" from "Damages awarded against them;" Dawson refused and they "are left exposed to the Danger of the Damages which may be recovered against" them. Of the opinion that Dawson intends to "go beyond the Limits of this State," the petitioners pray that he be restrained from "departing from this state" and that he be compelled "to pay to your Orators the amount of the purchase money ... together with such sums which for Interest Damages and Costs may or shall be recovered against your Orators In the suit now Pending as aforesaid by the said Joseph Jones."
