Petition #21381925

Abstract

Gordon and Sarah McKie Moore seek a partition of the slaves that she holds jointly with her sisters, Narcissa and Nancy McKie. The petitioners inform the court that Alexander McKie did "execute a certain deed of gift" in 1804 by which he "did give, convey, and deliver unto ... his said three daughters" certain slaves. They report that said deed directed said "negroes to remain undivided untill Sarah, your oratrix, the oldest daughter arrives at the age of eighteen years" or until she marries. They further attest that said McKie executed another deed of gift in 1811, with the same conditions, whereby he conveyed three more slaves to his daughters. Noting that Sarah "is above the age of eighteen years old" and is married, the Moores maintain that "they are anxious that the said negroes should be divided." The petitioners therefore pray that 18-year-old Narcissa and 16-year-old Nancy be summoned and that the said slaves, who now number fifteen be divided so that "your Orator and Oratrix may have their share of the said negroes."
