Petition #21381926

Abstract

John Thomas seeks compensation for his services as overseer for William Hobson. Thomas reports that he agreed to work as overseer on Hobson's plantation in the years 1809 and 1810 and "to furnish two negro Slaves of your orator ... to work as hands on the said plantation during the Said two years last mentioned: And in consideration thereof the Said William agreed to give to your orator one third of all the cotton ... and also one third of the increase of the Stock of cattle, Hoggs, Sheep &c." The petitioner further avows that he agreed to hire one of his female slaves to Hobson from 1811 to 1813 in exchange for "one eighth part of all the cotton which should be made on the Said plantation" during that period as well as "one eighth part of the increase of the Stock." He also asserts that he lent Hobson $65 and left 50 bushels of salt on Hobson's plantation, which he claims Hobson "sold and disposed of to his own use." Charging that Hobson has refused "to come to a fair and honest Settement," the petitioner prays that "your Honors decree that the Said William pay over to your orator his Shares of the Sales and procedes of the Several crops of cotton ... and also the value of his respective Shares of the procedes of the increase of the Stock."

Result: Dismissed.
