Petition #21382443

Abstract

On 21 April 1819, Charles Liles conveyed the whole of his estate, in trust, to James Ashford, for the benefit of his wife Sarah and his four children, Nancy, John, Nathan, and Jemima. The purpose of the conveyance was to provide for the family "a certain and suitable provision and support and to prevent them from coming to want and poverty by reason of the growing infirmities of the said Charles." Since that time, Sarah Liles has died. Liles's four children and Dr. Lana J. Hancock, the husband of said Nancy, charge that "the estate has not been so productive nor yielded so large a profit as it might otherwise have done had it been managed by private & self Interest." Their father "from age, infirmity & a confirmed habit of perpetual intoxication has become entirely incapable of governing, or taking care of himself or his family." They ask that guardians be appointed for the minor children; that Ashford be compelled to account for the trust estate, which includes at least thirty-nine slaves; that Charles Liles be granted "a competent & fully adequate provision ... during life;" and that "the whole of the said Estate be divided between your Orators and Oratrices."
