Petition #21382446

Abstract

Martha Taylor complains that, one week into her 1823 marriage with Henry Taylor, her said husband "quit the house of your Oratrix father where they were living" and fled to Georgia, where Martha is informed he has another wife. Henry took with him his property, which included a male slave, leaving Martha "wholly without the means of support except from her personal labour." She still lives with her parents, who she claims are "very poor owning neither land slaves nor money." Martha believes that a certain Needham Dudley of Columbia is indebted to her husband in the sum of three or four hundred dollars for the hire of a male slave. She thinks that Henry's mother, Mary Taylor, is in possession of said notes and is seeking to collect the same. Martha asks the court to issue an injunction against her mother-in-law and Dudley, so that they "may be prevented from paying" any money to Henry without the further direction of the court. Martha also asks the court to direct Henry Taylor, who is making a living as a blacksmith, to provide for her support.
