Petition #21382528

Abstract

James Piper and Robert Knox ask that John Stinson be enjoined in proceeding with the judgment that he recovered against them. The petitioners report that Piper had previously purchased two slaves from Stinson, with Knox serving as his security. However, Piper found that one of the slaves "proved to be so deficient in understanding as to be of no use or value, but an expense to your orator," and he filed suit against Stinson; when the bond came due, Stinson filed suit against Piper. Piper explains that each of them "obtained a verdict" against the other for roughly $871 and that Stinson, in an effort to collect against Piper and Knox, has lodged an execution against one of Knox's slaves. The petitioners now fear that Stinson is about to move to Georgia "after having shielded his property from the effect of the judgment against him." Piper and Knox ask that Stinson be enjoined from proceeding until their case can be heard in a court of equity.
