Petition #21382611

Abstract

Dr. Henry Ravenel, executor of the estate of the late Henry Ravenel, seeks the court's permission to sell five slaves bequeathed to the deceased's niece and nephew, Caroline and Benjamin Ravenel. The petitioner explains that one of the slaves is an "old woman superannuated" while the other four "from their ages are unfit for labor" (the eldest being eight years old). Ravenel reveals that the children's "circumstances ... render it exceedingly inconvenient that any part of their property should be unproductive." He reports that the heirs' uncle, Daniel James Ravenel, is willing to purchase the slaves for eight hundred dollars, a price the petitioner believes "to be more than could be got for them from any other person." He asks the court to vest the slaves' title in Daniel James Ravenel.
