Petition #21382904

Abstract

James F. Goodwyn seeks the court's permission to exchange a twenty-three-year-old female slave named Anney "for the benefit and advantage of his son Charles Frederic Goodwyn." The petitioner's mother, Sarah Goodwyn, bequeathed the slave girl to Charles by her 1821 will. Goodwyn explains that Charles is only ten years old and that Anney "exhibits at present time no promises of a future issue or Family increase." Citing "the disparity of their Two ages," he thinks it would be in his son's best interest to "exchange" Anney for "a Boy of about the same age of your Petitioner's son," who can then be indented "to some profitable trade."
