Petition #21382914

Abstract

Landon Miles, guardian of minor children Elizabeth, Sarah, Jane, and Mary Martindale, seeks the court's permission to purchase two slaves, who belonged to the girls' late parents. Miles reports that the administrator of the Martindales' estates, Isaac Tinsley, sold all the personal property of the estates including "the only negroes belonging to the family," Clara and her daughter Eliza. Miles explains that the slaves were "raised with the children and a mutual attachment" exists between them. He cites "the unanimous opinion of the friends and relatives of the children" that purchasing the "wench and child" would be to the girls' great advantage and benefit.
