Petition #21383402

Abstract

Thomas Stanly, administrator of the estate of Andrew Hunter Sr., asks the court to allow him to hire out some of the estate slaves. Hunter's will directed that his widow and children "be comfortably and suitably settled on one of his upper plantations" along with several slaves "that they might be profitably employed and the old negroes well taken care of without charge." Stanly points out that, "owing to the increase of said negroes ... and the unproductiveness of the lands," the estate is "subjected to much expense" for provisions and supplies. Hiring out some of the slaves would provide enough money "to supply necessary provisions," and the remaining slaves "might be more profitably employed." He therefore asks permission to hire out some of the slaves. In a supplemental bill filed six days later, Stanly asks the court to decree a sale of estate lands instead of slaves in order to pay outstanding debts and to prepare for partitioning the estate.

Result: Granted pro confesso; supplemental bill granted.
