Petition #21383918

Abstract

George and Malvina Richey pray for permission to sell a slave named Pompey. They inform the court that Pompey, a slave in the estate of Caroline Eliza McHardy, "has been recovered from the Indians of Florida" and is currently in the possession of John B. O'Neale, guardian of Mary E. McHardy. O'Neale "has been put to considerable expense in procuring the said boy Pompey to be brought to this State." The petitioners jointly own Pompey with Mary McHardy and Samuel and Caroline Mauldin. Since the commissioner has already sold the other estate slaves, there is no way to evenly divide Pompey's value among the heirs except by selling him and dividing the money. The petitioners state that they have annexed the consents of the other heirs to their petition, and they ask the court to order the sale.
