Petition #21384132

Abstract

Pendleton and Jennett Sheppard King ask that the "funds in the hands of [John] Paysinger" be used for "the purchase of a negro girl." They remind the court that they filed a bill in 1836 against said Paysinger, "who was the Guardian of the said Jennett," and that the court issued a decretal order in 1837 decreeing "that the funds in the hands of the said Paysinger be settled to sole & separate use of the said Jennett King." Citing that Paysinger has $522.66 in hand, the Kings represent "that they are desirous, and especially the petitioner Jennett King, that the funds now in the hands of the said John Paysinger ... be vested in the purchase of a negro girl, such as the said Jennett may direct; and that said negro girl be settled to the sole and separate use of the said Jennett King, during her life and after her death, to her children." They therefore pray that "John Paysinger be appointed the trustee of the said Jennett for the purposes above mentioned and that he purchase the negro girl and take titles for her, as the trustee of the said Jennett King." Paysinger's return reveals that "he purchased from Hill & Myrick a negro girl Slave aged about eleven years" for $350 in 1842. A related petition identifies the slave's name as Fanny.
