Petition #21384138

Abstract

Larkin Griffin joins Permelia Kilgore and her husband in seeking a distribution of the slaves in his and Permelia's grandfather's estate. Col. John Summers died in 1836 possessed of seventeen slaves, whom he left in life estate to his widow. His will ordered that, at her death, the slaves and their increase should be divided among his heirs, which included Larkin, Permelia and their minor brother, William Griffin, who are the children of Summers's late daughter, Mary B. Leavill. The colonel's widow has recently died, and commissioners have divided the life estate slaves into lots. The three children of Leavill have been assigned a lot of eight slaves, who now "remain for partition and division amongst the said complainants and Wm C Griffin." The petitioners pray that the court appoint commissioners to evaluate the slaves and then to distribute them among themselves and their brother.
