James W. Robert seeks to recover two slaves seized by William J. Harley, the sheriff of Barnwell District. Robert represents that, in January 1843, Benjamin Robert sold all his property, which consisted of twenty-three slaves, a plantation, livestock, tools, provisions, and cotton seeds, to him for the sum of $5,200. However, Harley has now seized two of the slaves in execution of a judgment obtained by Benjamin Robert’s creditors. The petitioner contends that his property cannot be liable for Benjamin’s debts. He therefore prays that the defendants be restrained from “seizing upon, selling, or in any way molesting” the property that he purchased from Benjamin Robert. He also asks that the two slaves seized by Harley be returned to his possession.
