Petition #21384329

Abstract

Robert Moorman seeks a confirmation of sales and requests an accounting of the valuation of properties. In 1838, Jemima Reed "assigned and conveyed" her entire estate to the petitioner, her son, to hold in trust. According to the deed of trust, Robert was to pay outstanding debts and to ensure an equitable distribution of property among Jemima's children. Moorman asserts that he could not pay the estate’s debts with the available funds and was forced to "make a sale of the ... bulk of the assets." The property, which included over twenty slaves, lands, livestock, and tools for planting, was distributed among four of Jemima's five children; the fifth, Jethro Reed, is still a minor. One of the slaves named Regina remains in Jemima's possession as a "body servant." The petitioner prays that the court confirm this division, in order that the property "may be forever protected." Moorman further requests that Reuben L. Chick, Williamson T. Clarke, and A. G. Maybin, husbands of Jemima's three daughters, account for the valuations of their properties. [Petition missing page/s]
