Petition #21384702

Abstract

John Terrel, Josiah Evans, and James Forniss, "the surviving Trustees of the Estate of Caroline Williams," ask that the sale or trade of a slave be confirmed. The petitioners represent that William Pledger, the father of said Caroline, bequeathed to them certain slaves "in trust for the use of the said Caroline Williams during her natural life" and that among said slaves was "a negro Boy named Isaac." They charge "that the said slave Isaac had got into the habit of runing away & lying out, and also committing crimes and misdmeanours in the neighbourhood to such an extent that it became necessary to keep him cofined in Jail, which rendered him much less valuable than he otherwise would have been." Fearing that Isaac's "example and association with the other slaves of said Trust Estate might operate injuriously on them," the trustees "sold or exchanged said boy Isaac, to one Isaac Weatherly" for a 17-year-old slave named Roda. The petitioners therefore "pray your Honours to confirm the sale or exchange of said Boy Isaac" and that "said Girl Roda may be substituted in place of said Boy Isaac, and become the property of the children of the said Caroline Williams."
