Petition #21384955

Abstract

The heirs of the late Roderick Arndel seek to protect their remainder interest in slaves from his estate. By his will, Arndel left slaves named Eliza and Willy to his widow, Rhoda Arndel, "during her natural life and at her death to be equally divided between his children." Despite only having a life estate in the slaves, Arndel has sold one of Eliza's "several" children, "Emaline a very likely girl to one John Sarratt & threatens to sell the reminder of them & send them out of the state." Sarratt "was fully advised of the rights of the complainants" concerning the slave; notwithstanding, however, he "has either sold or is about to sell the said negro girl & has her run out of the state & out of the reach of the complainants." The petitioners therefore pray that Arndel and Sarratt both be made to give "bond and security" that they will not remove anymore of the estate slaves from the jurisdiction and that Emaline be "delivered up" to them.
