Thomas C. Harleston, guardian of the minor E. C. Harleston, asks that inquiry be made as to ascertain "the propriety of granting an order for the sale of the negroes," who were "allotted to the said minor as her portion of the Estate of her mother." Harleston cites "that the said negroes have heretofore been employed on the Plantation belonging to the estate of the late John Harleston, which has recently been sold, and the said minor has now no land to employ them on." He further notes that his ward's "portion of the gang of negroes have so intermarried with the others as to make it desirable to keep the families together, and for this purpose it would be advisable to sell them so as to give those owning the others an opportunity of purchasing." In particular, Harleston states that "one of the said negroes of the said minor Statira was the nurse of the said minor and her mother and she would therefore prefer retaining her."
