Petition #21385011

Abstract

Lucinda Cook seeks to sell a male slave named Lige in order to purchase land for herself and her family. She informs the court that "by a decree of this court, a certain negro man slave by the name of Lige about twenty three years of age was settled in trust upon her, and that Wm K Brown was appointed her trustee." Cook relates that "neither she nor her husband have any lands" and that "several of her children are now large enough to work in the field, and able to make a support for her & family." The petitioner and her husband note that "negroes command at this time very high prices and that the said negro man would sell at a high price he being young & Likely." Revealing that "this negro is all the property she possesses of any value," she admits that "if he were to leave her all would be lost, but if the proceeds" of his sale "were vested in lands it would secure her little property beyond the causalites to which personal property is liable." She therefore prays "your Honors to order & direct a sale of the said slave Lige upon such terms as may appear most suitable and advantageous to her and that the proceeds of such sale be vested in the lands."
