Abstract

Marian Naudin, "Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas and Magistrate Ex Officio," attests that Joseph W. Doby "made oath that he is well acquainted with Thomas Pettifoot a free colored man about twenty one years of age and further States that he was also Well acquainted with his father Nelson Pettifoot and also his Mother Netty Pettifoot and that both of them were Free persons of Color and enjoyed their freedom and is Known and reputed to be such free persons and that he has been a guardian for his Father & the family for many years." Naudin also certifies that he has been "Acquainted with the above named Thomas Pettifoot and his ancestors for many years." [The actual petition of Thomas Pettifoot is not included in the Project's documents; however, this certification of an affidavit is used in lieu of his petition.]
