Petition #21385259

Abstract

The heirs of the late Dr. William Bratton seek an account of advancements made to John and Sophia Crawford. Dr. William Bratton died intestate in 1850, survived by a widow, his children, and grandchildren. Shortly after his death, the heirs filed a bill "for a division of the estate of the said deceased." James L. Stewart was appointed administrator "of all the personal estate except the negro property;" commissioners were appointed to oversee the division of the slaves. The commissioners "expected and required that each of the said heirs and distributees should render an account" of any advancements made by Dr. Bratton. The petitioners assert that John A. Crawford and his wife Sophia "returned and certified ... that they had received nothing by way of advancement" and were granted "their full share of the estate." However, the petitioners maintain that Crawford "received large advancements from the said Dr. William Bratton" including "the work and labor of three house carpenters." The petitioners ask that John and Sophia Crawford give a full account of all transactions and gifts connected with the Bratton estate.
