Petition #21385310

Abstract

John P. Kinard, the executor of the late Isham Goree, seeks the sale of a slave named Jim. He reports that his testator died in 1851 and that "at the time of his death and for near two years before he had a negro man named Jim run away." Ascertaining "that the said negro man was in jail in the state of Mississippi advertized to be sold for Jail fees and expenses as a run away," Kinard represents that he "sent on and redeemed him and had him brought to this District." The petitioner, however, believes that "it would be against the interest of the said Estate to put the said negro man back on the farm with the other slaves of the deceased, as it is very doubtfull whether he can be kept there, and may induce some of the other negroes to leave with him." Noting that "the widow of the said testator refuses to let him come upon the place and desires that he shall be sold," the petitioner prays that "your Honors may grant your petitioner an order to sell the said negro man."

Result: Granted.
