Petition #21385356

Abstract

Lewis Gillam and sixteen-year-old Meredith Moon Gillam seek their share of the estate of the late Dr. William Moon, the father of said Meredith. They report that Dr. Moon died intestate in 1836, "leaving a considerable Real and personal Estate," which "consisted principally of Lands & negroes;" Dr. Moon also left a widow and two daughters "as his distributees and heirs at law." They further represent that Dr. Peter Moon "took out letters of administration upon the Estate of Dr. William Moon decd. and took possession of his personal Estate," paying all the debts and charges of said estate. They state that Gen. James Gillam, the grandfather of said Meredith, was appointed guardian of her person and estate in 1840 and that "the share of said proceeds comeing to your Oratrix was paid over by the commissioners ... to the said Gen James Gillam." The petitioners charge that they have not received "the share of said Estate to which your Oratrix was entitled" and that "they are unable to ascertain how much of said Estate has been received by the said guardian." They pray that the defendants "may be decreed to pay over to your Orator & Oratrix the share of said Estate to which they are Entitled." The related documents reveal that Meredith left school to elope with said Lewis, a man of "very little, if any, means," and that her grandfather did not consent to said marriage.
