Petition #21385403

Abstract

The minor petitioners represent that they "are entitled to Sixty six slaves which they claim under the will of their grand Father the late Richard Singleton being the excess over two hundred slaves Found at the Testator's death on his two estates called True Blue and the Fork." They aver that they "(except Richard) have no lands upon which the said slaves can be worked." Richard asserts that he "owns a plantation called the Home place, under the will of his grand father ... whereon he has about fifty negroes, and that it is important to him that his share of the slaves abovementioned should be set apart and employed upon his plantation;" his siblings, however, submit that "it is desirable that their portion of the said slaves should be set apart to them and sold." The Singleton heirs further state that they "are entitled to sixteen slaves allotted to them upon the partition recently made at the plantation called Dyson in Sumter District, and these they desire in like manner to be sold, except Richards share." They therefore pray "that partition be made among them of the said sixty six slaves and sixteen slaves, allotting to Richard R Singleton his one sixth part thereof, and that the remaining five/sixths be sold and the proceeds invested in safe securities."
