Margarett Griffin and her husband, Richard L. Griffin, seek to sell a slave, whom she inherited from her father. By his will, the late William Dunlop bequeathed to his daughter a 728-acre plantation and ten slaves, to be held in trust for her sake. The Griffins now inform the court "that one of the negroes- by name Addison ... has become unruly and disobedient, so much so as it is impossible for your petitioners to controll him." In consequence, they pray that Margarett's trustees be allowed to sell the slave and that the proceeds from said sale be used to purchase another slave or slaves.
