Eliza Hallonquist and her husband, Francis, demand the return of her slave. During her infancy, Hallonquist's grandfather gave "a parole gift to your Oratrix of a certain negro slave named Beck." Prior to her 1854 marriage, Eliza resided with her mother and stepfather, Augustus B. Green, using Beck as her personal attendant. Upon her marriage and removal to her husband's dwelling, she left the slave at Green's residence. The Hallonquists have made several "friendly demands" to Green for the return of the slave, but they have been refused. Eliza asserts that she "is much attached" to Beck, having had her as an "attendant and companion ... from her earliest infancy." The petitioners further assert that Beck "is of peculiar value to them, and that the payment to them of damages for her value would not be adequate Compensation for her loss." In consequence, they pray that Green be ordered to the slave to them.
