Petition #21385538

Abstract

Samuel Webb seeks to recover two slaves from his father-in-law, Joshua Corley. Webb represents that Joshua gave him three slaves in 1843. The slaves remained in his possession until the summer of the present year when Joshua took possession of Sina and her daughter Jane. When Webb attempted to regain possession of the two slaves, Joshua and his son Thornton gave him various excuses. Thornton claimed that Joshua had deeded the two slaves to him and to Sampson Corley. He asserted, however, that he was prepared to release the two slaves if Webb executed a document wherein he agreed to place the slaves in trust for the benefit of his wife and children and to deliver the slaves to Thornton and Sampson whenever they deemed it fit. Webb refused to sign. Webb avows that Sina is very valuable to him and his family. Her “constitution temper and qualities are good” and “attachments have grown up” between her family and his. He claims to have been offered a price for Sina beyond her market value and to have refused the offer because Sina is of “peculiar value” to him. Webb therefore seeks an order compelling Joshua and Thornton Corley to deliver Sina and Jane to him and to account for the value of Sina's hires since she has been in their possession.
