Petition #21385574

Abstract

Elias C. Leitner, "Committee of Sabilla K. Shelton a lunatic," seeks to protect her interest in her late father's estate. Sabilla's father, Samuel Shelton, died and left her "between Seven and Eight thousand Dollars in cash and some negroes." Leitner reports that "Joseph Shelton her brother was her guardian and wasted" her property. Sabilla's share of the slaves "are now very numerous and have been disposed of in various ways ... so that from a very handsome estate, the said Sibilla K. has been reduced to utter insolvency dependent upon the charity of her friends for the means of living." Leitner admits his uncertainty as to "the truth of the case," but, as he understands it, Sabilla's relatives have used "any kind of false and fraudulent means" to gain control of her inheritance. He has learned the whereabouts of several of the slaves and has, "in a friendly way applied to the parties" who hold them, but they have "uniformly refused to give them up." Therefore, he prays that the nine individuals believed to hold Sabilla's slaves be made to account for the property. In his answer, Robert Beatty claims that he purchased a slave named Squire from Samuel Sims and that the slave was never part of Sabilla's property.

Result: Dismissed.
