Petition #21385607

Abstract

Twenty-year-old Lydia G. Sollee joins Clinton Ward, her guardian, in asking that the six slaves, of whom she "is possessed in her own right," be sold. The petitioners point out that the said slaves are in three "different places" and range in age from twenty-six to fifteen years old. They "are desirous that the said slaves should be sold inasmuch as the said Lydia G by reason of her sex and tender years is not a fit & proper person to manage them, and inasmuch as the petitioner Clinton Ward is removed from her place of residence ... & therefore unable to supervise and control them in a proper and profitable manner." They further cite that "all of the said slaves are male and therefore there is no prospect or likelihood of their increase." Noting "the very high prices now paid for such property," the petitioners "deem such sale highly advantageous to the interest of the said Lydia G." They therefore pray the court to authorize such sale.
