Petition #21385705

Abstract

Bartholomew Carroll joins his wife, Eliza A. Carroll, and his brother-in-law, I. Jenkins Mikell, in requesting the sale of a family of slaves. The petitioners point out that Mrs. Providence Mikell "bequeathed to the said I. Jenkins Mikell certain negro slaves with the future issue of the females in trust for her daughter the said Eliza A Carroll for her sole and separate use." They further report that in 1853 "all of the said slaves were sold with the exception of the slave Elsey ... and her three children." The petitioners state that "the said Eliza A. Carroll desired to retain the said slave Elsey as a house servant but since that time the conduct of the said slave Elsey has been so unruly that she is of little or no service to your Petitioner the said Eliza A Carroll." In addition, they cite that Elsey is "expensive to her from the cost of clothing and supporting the said slave and her children and from the heavy taxes to the city paid for the said negro slaves." They therefore pray that their petition "be referred to one of the Masters to inquire into and report upon the facts contained in the within Petition" and that if a sale should be authorized "the proceeds of sale be invested by the trustee in such securities as the Court may direct."
