Petition #21385804

Abstract

Frederick and Marie Louisa Werber request permission to sell a male slave named Allen. They report that John Bobo, Mary Louisa's father, conveyed Allen and nine other slaves to Silas Johnston in 1856 to be held in trust for the benefit of his daughter and her future children. The petitioners complain that Allen "has become unfaithful, unreliable, and vicious, -- and of such a character as that his example will result injuriously to the other slaves if kept in the same place with them." The petitioners ask the court to empower the defendant to sell Allen and to reinvest any proceeds from his sale in another slave to be held in trust.

Result: Referred; granted.
