Petition #21385816

Abstract

Hardy Stuckey requests payment for the services of his slave and the value of his portion of a cotton crop. In 1855 Stuckey and Thomas Fraser entered into a contract to plant cotton on rented lands in Florida. According to the agreement, Stuckey would furnish two slaves and receive two shares of the crop while Fraser would "furnish eleven hands and receive eleven shares." A cotton crop was raised, but Stuckey never received his share of the profits. One of the slaves Stuckey provided for the venture was a carpenter. The petitioner hired this slave to Fraser at the rate of $20 per month in the construction of a gin house, but the defendant never paid said hire. Stuckey has appealed to Fraser for his share of the crop and for compensation for the use of his slave, but Fraser has refused. The petitioner asks that Fraser be compelled to pay him the value of his portion of the crop and for the hire of his slave.
